The great thing about our Fotona hair removal is that it is almost completely pain free! Hair follicles grow at different times and that is the reason we need multiple treatments. Pre-treatment is shaving the day before laser. Don’t worry if you forget, we have razors. UV exposure for 7 days pre- and post-treatment. Avoid sunburns and tans for at least 2 weeks prior to treatment. Avoid sunless tanning products for 7 days before treatment. Side effects are uncommon but may include; Hyperpigmentation (darkening of skin), Hypopigmentation (loss of skin pigmentation), mild to moderate burns or blisters, permanent skin discoloration. temporary redness, follicular edema (little pink/red “puffiness and small bumps like “goose bumps”), swelling and itching in the treated area, hives, rashes, bruising and lack of desired results. Clients who are pregnant cannot be treated with laser and sorry we cannot treat over tattoos, but we can treat around them. Deodorant can be used the next day if there is no/minimal irritation. Shaving may resume in 4-5 days if needed.
Treatments should be scheduled every 6 weeks with 4-7 treatments needed depending on hair thickness.

Avoid any prolonged sun or tanning exposure (including suntan sprays or “fake tanners” bronzing lotion) 1-2 weeks before treatment. On the day of treatment keep your treatment areas clean, free of make-up & lotions. No problem if you forget, we have makeup remover. Clients who are pregnant can be treated with laser. Sorry, we cannot treat over tattoos, but we can treat around them. Please be sure to bring glasses if you are a contact lens wearer. For Fotona 4D you may have red or white patches in your mouth and you mouth may be dry. You may use Biotene for dry mouth and/or Orajel for irritation. Your skin may feel warm with blotchy redness. There may be mild swelling in areas treated. The redness usually goes away within 1-3 days. You may feel that your skin is tighter immediately following your procedure and for up to a few weeks. The feeling is due to an initial swelling or edema. For redness, you may apply a good moisturizer or hydrocortisone cream available at your pharmacy without a prescription. For some facial procedures near the eyes, the eyes can get mildly dry or irritated. They should not be painful or scratchy. Refresh Tears, which is available over the counter at your pharmacy, help moisturize your eyes if they are minority irritated or itchy. You can continue to use makeup & skin care regimens following your procedure. If your eyes are painful or if you have difficulty with your vision, please go to the nearest emergency room.
Dr. Cespedes will give his recommendations during your consultation.
Fotona 4D and Smootheye Treatments may be scheduled every 14 to 21 days and 3-7 treatments are needed with a single yearly maintenance treatment needed.
Pre procedure
Avoid vitamin E, Fish oil tablets, Ginko Biloba, Advil, Aleve, or Aspirin for 7 days prior. If you are under a doctor’s care and taking those under the doctor’s advice, please check with your prescriber. If you are taking any blood thinners such as Coumadin or Plavix, fillers may not be for you.
Post procedure avoid alcohol for 24 hours, avoid direct sunlight or saunas for a few days after fillers, always wear sunblock. You may use ice for swelling or Tylenol.
Dermal fillers are usually very safe, satisfying procedures and last usually from 6-18 months. It is important to know the possible problems with dermal fillers.
It is common to have bruising, bleeding and swelling post procedure.
Please notify the office if there is any lumps, asymmetry in the application.
Allergy to the filler is rare but possible. Seek immediate attention for rash or difficulty breathing or swelling in or around the mouth.
If you notice any change in vision, stroke symptoms (difficulty speaking asymmetry of the face or confusion), white skin, darkening skin or worsening pain over the area injected, please call Key West Med Spa or go to the Emergency Room immediately. This can be a sign of loss of blood supply to the area and needs immediate attention. Do not delay in taking care of the situation, even if you think it’s not too bad. Prompt attention can help prevent permanent harm.
Pre-botox treatments it is best not to drink too much alcohol.
Post botox it is best not to drink too much alcohol for a day. Don’t lie down after a treatment for 4 hours. Don’t rub the areas where botox was applied. It is best not to work out for 24 hours after a Botox application. You may use ice pack to the area if needed. If there is asymmetry in your treatment notify us or stop by. These issues occasionally happen and can usually be rectified quickly.
Common side effects are bruising, bleeding, and lumps under skin.
Notify the office if you have any drooping of the eye brow or eye lid drooping.
If there is any problem with vision go to the emergency room immediately.
Rare allergic reactions such as trouble breathing or swallowing or hives need to be treated immediately in an Emergency Room setting. If you have any swelling in or around the mouth or any trouble breathing, go to the Emergency Room immediately.
Instructions:
The following instructions are only for the deep peels we perform infrequently. Clients receiving these types of peels will be well aware of these instructions prior to the procedure and unless the doctor has specifically mentioned it, these instructions do not apply to you. They are not for clients receiving hair removal, smootheye, tightsculpting, Fotona 4D’s, medium or light peels.
If Dr. Cespedes thinks you will need pain medication, you should purchase your pain medication prior to your procedure. Please bring your pain medication with you to your procedure appointment.
Have someone you know drive you home. (No uber, taxi e.t.c.). We want you to get home safely after having taken your pain medication.
Bring your largest hat, a scarf (or face/neck gaiter) and sunglasses to your appointment.
After the procedure your face will be red, bloody and covered with Aquaphor. Don’t plan on social events for at least 1-2 weeks. Work is up to you. Usually I tell people they will be peeling and look like they had the worst sunburn for at least a week. Makeup usually can be lightly applied after a week.
The procedure will take less than an hour.
You will take one of your pain pills in the med spa, while you are waiting for your procedure. You may take another pain pill 4 hours later, thereafter every 6 hours. Don't itch your face. Take your pain medication or extra-strength Tylenol instead of itching your face. Because your pain medication has Tylenol in it, don't take the pain medication and the Tylenol at the same time. They have to be separated by a minimum of 4 hours. Choose one or the other.
If your face still itches, apply new Aquaphor or the vinegar solution below. Apply Aquaphor every 6 or so hours. Aquaphor may be removed with tap water or vinegar solution below. Don't scrub. Place a towel over bedding, especially pillows as the Aquaphor gets everywhere.
To cool and soothe your face you may use 1 tablespoon of white vinegar to 1 cup of room temperature tap water and soak a clean white cloth and apply to your face for 20 minutes every 3-6 hours. Do not scrub, at least for the first 4-5 days. The vinegar solution is not necessary, but it can soothe the face.
Use Aquaphor for at least 5 days, thereafter as needed.
You will peel over the next 5 days to 2 weeks, then the redness will improve every 2 days or so for about 2 weeks. Results are usually noticeable after 2 weeks but continue to rapidly improve for 2 months and then more slowly for an additional 4 months. If a second or third deep peel is needed, it is usually performed in 2-3 months.
Purchase:
Pain meds
Aquaphor at the pharmacy
Cooking type white vinegar
The “No's"
1. Sun - it will burn if your skin even gets a little exposure over the next two weeks. Wear hats and cover exposed treated areas with clothing for at least a month. Sunscreen of spf 25 or more applied every 2-4 hours is recommended after you no longer need Aquaphor.
2. Retinol products - please do not use for at least a month after the procedure.
3. No moderate or intense exercise for 3-5 days. The sweat will sting your face and you will have aquaphor on your face anyway. Walking indoors or at night or evening should be fine.
